ActiveSync and Direct Push work only if Oulook is open TOMSAV
Srv 2003 SP1 / Exchange 2003 SP2 / Windows mobile V5

Hi

I have 3 clients with Windows Mobile V5.
OMA Setup is OK, I can synchronise with exchange , so Direct Puch send /
receive is OK, but I can receive the mail ONLY when clients PC with Outlook
2003 is open.
If outlook is closed I can send the mail from mobile but can not receive the
mails or calendar/contact/task update.

I made the test on 2 diffrents Exchange 2003 SP2 (branch office) but the
result is the same.

Any idea?

What error messages do you get? You don't even need to *have* a desktop
computer or Outlook to use EAS, absolutely.

I agree there is no need for any desktop PC , but without desktop PC &
Outlook open I can not receive anything.
It seems like activesynch need established RPC connection...to work. It's
strange.
There is no errors at all. Once AciveSynch started, he synchronise
calendar, inbox, task and contacts but there is no any new mail all other
new event in calendar, contact or task.

Exchange is with SP2 but Win 2003 is SP1 (some compatibility issue with
SP2)
Other windows updates are OK.

If you set this up using local ActiveSync software on the desktop, check the
settings. I'd suggest you delete the ActiveSync info from the handheld, and
set it up again, manually (don't connect it to a desktop at all).

Smartphones were configured manually with more than 5 or 6 complete reset.
Outlook on Laptops is configured in Cached Mode for offline use (sales
stuff) but I have the same problem without cached mode.

Outlook has nothing to do with this, unless you're using Internet Mail
accounts in Outlook (which I presume you aren't).

Are you using SSL? A trusted third party cert or a self-signed cert you
copied in manually & installed on the device?

If you open your Activesync on the device and uncheck everything except
mail, that'd be a good test - see what happens & if you get any errors.

Hi

There is no Outlook Internet Mail account (pure Exchange mailbox. J)

I do not use SSL (only for now).

SSL is supported by my telecom provider only for Exchange hosted directly by
provider.

So I can use only Port 80. Probably we will change phone company to as soon
as process is validate.

There is no cert for now. I have to make work 3 Smartphones before to begin
massive deployment for all users. For test purpose there is no need for
cert. Am I right?

I found some information about Windows Mobil & Computer Associate e-Trust
Anti Virus issue (With e-mail option for Exchange).

Have to check some proactive anti virus mode.

Good.

This is unwise. I don't like opening up HTTP traffic to my networks at all.

Hmm. What does your telecom provider have to do with this? They provide the
internet service....and surely you can install your own custom SSL cert on
the devices. I have yet to meet the device for which this is not true.

I have never tried to do this without SSL, so I can't tell you....

I don't use CA, but with any antivirus software you must make sure you have
the proper exclusions set in Exchange, or you will be sad. Exchange
database/log/queue folders, at a miniumum, must be excluded from any & all
file level scanning.

You haven't mentioned what happened when you tried my suggestion (untick
everything except mail on the handheld, make sure Outlook is closed, and
force a sync)

Orange, my PHONE telecom company for mobil phones has SSL (Port 443)
reserved for own use with
own Exchange hosted servers.

It's same thing. I try to uncheck Calendar option ( and others also) without
outlook
but result is same: no synch man.

Re: ActiveSync and Direct Push work only if Oulook is open
Hello,

I have the same issue.

SBS 2003 Exchange SP2 6.5 Build 7638.2

It worked like charm for almost a year. Now I have the same issue. It
started with a Nokia E61 but now affects also the Mobile 6 users.

I dont think it is SSL related because initial sync works. But no items are
synced when no Outlook is connected.

I have installed the Event Sink for calendars recently but cannot confirm a
correlation between the two things. (Yeah change management I know ... :-) )

Any help would be very very appreciated

Regards
Jan
