Certificate problem with windows mobile 5
Can someone please provide the steps for correcting the issue so I can sync
exchange 2003 sp2 with a windows mobile 5 client. I am getting the server
certificate is invalid. It is not. windows mobile 6 can connect without a
problem.

Thanks,

Ah well. Just because WM6 can and WM5 can't, doesn't actually make the
cert valid as far as WM5 is concerned.
WM5 didn't have all the root certs that WM6 has. Are you sure that you
have the root cert on the device?

I got the 'root' certs from Verisign. I copied them over to the device. When
I tried to install the cert, it told be I do not have sufficient permsions to
install this.....

Should I go back to the ISP - Verizon?

Sufficient permission is an utterly different question from the one
you asked.
Either wait for someone to give you some advice about unlocking the
Verizon phone (It was a real pain in Orange in the UK with WM5) or go
to Verizon & ask.

Re: Certificate problem with windows mobile 5
Hi,

Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.

Based on my research, the certificate error happens when you enable SSL for
ActiveSync access but your mobile device doesn't trust the Certificate
Authority which issues this certificate

Since you use the third party certificate, please contact the mobile
manufacture to see if they have their own tool to install the certificate.

More info:

How to install root certificates on a Windows Mobile-based device
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/915840/

Error message when you use ActiveSync to synchronize a Windows Mobile
5.0-based device: "The security certificate on the server is invalid"
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=915438

Hope this helps.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Best regards,

Robert Li(MSFT)

Check here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841060/en-us

You can download a utility specific to Verizon phones.
On the phone, create a folder called Storage. Put the SPAddCert.exe file
(Verizon one from the link above) and the root certificate (from Verisign)
into the Storage folder.
On the device, browse to the Storage folder, and double tap the
SPAddCert.exe file - it should find the cert and allow you to select and
install it.
Soft-reset the phone.
