Our company has decided not to upgrade Exchange and pick an alternative mail server such as postfix. I need to backup all of the mail into a format that I could then migrate to whatever mail server that we choose. Is there anyone here who has dealt with such a migration and know where I could start or who to get help from? I tried to take a cursory peek at the edb's, but didn't know where to obtain a driver for the version of jet that exchange 5.5 uses. I also fruitlessly looked at other interfaces such as CDO (which would be a mess with COM in c++, and i am not familiar with vb) and the edk (the archive download from microsoft seems to be missing some files). Also, has anyone looked at or heard about the SuSE Linux Openexchange Server? Any help (including commercial products/consultancy services) would be appreciated. Thanks, Merrick
If you are using Outlook as a client for the new mail system then the mail could be archived off to pst files. We might be weaning off outlook as well, and we wanted the migration to be transparent for the end-user. The best-case scenario would be to keep the e-mails on the server just in case there at least one 1 of n users who would want to view/search for an old email and is connecting from his home mail client. But you're right... we could just let the users take care of their own stuff (and I could start being less obsessive-compulsive!). An alternative would be to let them import stuff from outlook into thunderbird (it connects to exchange through mapi), and it would be in an inherently open format (unlike pst) that we could use. Or use the mapi code from thunderbird to do whatever.
