Re: remove attachments from old messages or delete old, large messages ?
Depending on the Exchange version you are using and user usage patterns, you
may be able to use SATA storage for Exchange. In Exchange 2007 for medium
and below user profiles with users in cached mode, it makes a lot of sense.
The 500GB SATAs tend to be the sweet spot for 2GBish mailboxes in this case.
In this case, you'd be better off just provisioning and allocatinge more
storage for Exchange.
For Exchange 2003 environments or heavy or ultra heavy user load Exchange
2007 environments, you're probably looking at FC SCSI drives as the best fit
for performance/space requirements. In this case, you may want to look at
third party archiving products that extract the mail and attachments,
replace them with a stub, and place them in lower cost (and lower
performance) SATA storage. You'll need to do a cost/benefit analysis vs.
adding more SCSI storage and larger mailboxes on exchange to see if this is
the right solution for your environment.

Re: remove attachments from old messages or delete old, large messages ?
What I'd like is the facility I had in Exchange 2003 to perform mailbox
management on both size and/or age, that isn't in Exchange 2007
unfortunately
Really it isn't disk storage that's the issue but backing up to tape all
this ancient rubbish that I can't persuade our users to make the minimal
effort needed to delete themselves.
email messages themselves take up minimal space so there's really no harm in
keeping them all. All the space is taken up by large attachments, all of
which in "Sent Items" at least already exist in users home drives etc.

Backup to disk is another option. Over gig Ethernet this can dramatically
reduce backup times.
B2D is often used in conjunction with tape. Use B2D for your daily backups
then tape once per week or month or whatever.

Re: remove attachments from old messages or delete old, large messages ?
Backup to Disk and Snapshots are other options to help you shrink the backup
window.
