GAL using outside SMTP reference
As network admin for a small company (less than 50 users), one of my many
responsibilities is to administer Exchange 2000, which is part of SBS. I
am therefore not terribly familiar with all the intricacies of Exchange
2000. A request has come in from management to include 1 special user in
the GAL. This user is a member of the AD however they really do not use
their exchange mailbox at all SpecialUser@ourdomain.com. This user is part
of a branch office that uses and different mail server for their e-mail
(SpecialUser@yahoo.com). Management would like to have this user, with
their SpecialUser@yahoo.com included in the GAL to make it easier for them
to include them in emails. Is it possible to do this?

I tried the following AD>Users>Select the users Properties>E-mailAddresses.
The e-mail address type lists 2 types. One the SMTP address and two the
X400 Address. I tried changing the smtp address to the
SpecialUser@yahoo.com, however even though it did appear in the GAL, it
still sent to their local account SpecialUser@ourdomain.com and not to the
SpecialUser@yahoo.com. It still seems to be using the X400 address. My
thinking is that if I delete the X400 reference in the users properties that
it will be forced to send to SpecialUser@yahoo.com. Is this the proper way
to achieve this goal? Am I going to cause problems by deleting the X400
reference? Please advise. Thanks in advance for any help.

They should be a mail-enabled user rather than a mailbox-enabled user.
You should be (it's been a damn long while) able to right click on
them in AD Users and Computers to say "remove mailbox" or "remove mail
attributes". That said, it's all SBS and unless you use wizards you
can bork it all up.
Do they even need an account here though? WOuldn't it just be easier
to remove their account and create an AD mail enabled contact for
them?

I guess we need a little more info on what access the user needs into
your network before deciding on the best course.

If the specialuser already has a mailbox you can remove the mailbox
(right-click the user and select "Exchange tasks...", then "delete
mailbox"). Then make the user a mail-enabled user (right-click the
user and select "Exchange tasks..." and use the "Establish Email
address"). Of course, if you want to preserve the current mailbox
contents you should probably move them to a PST file first. :-)

Thanks guys. Regarding mail-enabled vs mailbox-enabled, they are really not
using the mailbox at all. They do however need the AD account because they
remote desktop into one of our pc's to use our desktop applications but they
do not use exchange for email at all.
