EdgeTransport.exe took 98% CPU time
Hello,
My Exchange HUB Server stopped working with the following symptoms
The process EdgeTransport.exe took 98% CPU time, and
\TransportRoles\QueueDatabasePath\
file mail.que increases in the amount per minute at approximately 100mb,
then when the size mail.que reaches about 4 GB service
MSExchangeTransport.exe dies, after auto start its stuck at the stage of
starting.
At the same time, there is a normal activity in mail queue
What could be caused so abnormal behavior?
Configurations Server farm,
local 2 global catalogs in same subnet, 1Gb net link
1 HUB/CAS Server Exchange Server 2007 SP1, UR1,
2 Mailbox in Cluster SCR, Exchange Server 2007 SP1, UR1
Forefront Security for Exchange SP1, on HUB/CAS Server, currently in disable
stage.
Thanks,
Arman Obosyan.

RE: EdgeTransport.exe took 98% CPU time
Hello,
Thank you for your post. My name is Robbin Meng, and it is my pleasure to
work with you on this issue!
Please allow me to confirm that my understandings are correct. As I
understand it, the issue is:
The Exchange HUB Server stopped working and the process Exchange Transport
Service (EdgeTransport.exe) took 98% CPU. The Mai Queue increases in the
amount per minute at approximately 100mb, then the size of Mail Queue
reaches about 4 GB
If I have misunderstood your concerns please feel free to let me know.
The worker process (EdgeTransport.exe) is responsible for receiving the
SmtpReceive connections from the Process Manager (MSExchangeTransport.exe)
and performing all of the work associated with message delivery.
Based on the current symptoms and research, I suggest we consider the
following scenarios:
1. If you have install any anti-virus or anti-spam software like MacAfee or
Trend, please temporarily disable all of them.
2. Have you install Edge Transport server role? If so, please check if
there is any recipient filtering/Connection filtering etc. to block some of
the mails.
3. Check if open relay had been opened on the server that caused many UCE
messages.
4. If there is any large message(possible zipped file) that was being sent
through the system.
At the same time, have you installed the latest Update Rollup 2 for
Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1? If not, please apply it from the
following link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948016
More information, please see:
The Edgetransport.exe process may stop unexpectedly on a Exchange Server

The Edgetransport.exe process may crash intermittently on an Exchange
Server 2007 Service Pack 1 Edge server
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947551/en-us
If the issue persists after performing the above steps, please help me to
collect more information:
Information Need
==============
1. If possible, please let me know when did this issue begin to occur and
what you have changed on the HUB/CAS Server or other server that may caused
this issue to occur.
2. Check event viewer for related information, if there are anything
related Transport service, please help save it to *.evt and send to me at:

I look forward to your reply. Also, if you have any questions or concerns,
please do not hesitate to let me know.
Thank you for your time and cooperation!

Re: EdgeTransport.exe took 98% CPU time
The issue solved,
It was found that the problem arose only if the one of mailbox stores has
been mounted (Mailbox-Q1a, 100Mb Storage quota, a proximal 1000 users)
After dismount store on the mailbox server, stop the service
MSExchangeTransport on HUB Server and removing the contents of the folder
\TransportRoles\QueueDatabasePath\
And then starting the service MSExchangeTransport.exe, without a mount for
Mailbox-Q1a, everything worked well, in addition there are other 3 Mailbox
store about 2500 users in it.
All working well, and in the mail queue nothing special, just mails in queue
because of a letter delivered offline Mailbox-Q1a, all services are working
normally system works as needed. After mount Mailbox-Q1a all the letters of
mail queue are delivered to customers all also functioning normally.
In a moment I noticed that just a few seconds, came in a letter size 858452
KB (~ 830Mb !!!!!!!!!!!!!), first time not having to remove it, HUB server
starts behave the same increase in mail.que file on HUB transport server in
folder \TransportRoles\QueueDatabasePath\ , and so on, waiting a bit when
the file size has reached approximately 2Gb I stopped the service
MSExchangeTransport and running defrag mail.que (eseutil-d mail.que) and
here it was! mail.que after defragmentation have 858452 size in KB, I check
procedure dismount mount defrag a few times, all times repeated each time a
letter in the mail queue to appear and disappear, even when removing it from
the mail queue (Delete with NO NDR)
All repeated and repeated, after export senders mailbox to pst (of which was
a great letter), and removed it from the server mailbox store (Mailbox-Q1a)
and launch of Online Database Maintenance parameters Retain Deleted Mailbox
0 days, and subsequent mounting base everything worked!
When viewing extracted pst file were identified as the user tried to send a
movie(!!!) sizes in 613 Mb sent items in 613 MB, and in the inbox NDR witch
text The message exceeds the maximum size allowed.
The question arises as a user sitting in Store which has a limit of 100 Mb
push in himself mailbox 613Mb???
As Exchange has sent him a letter attached to the NDR in 613 Mb, when global
limit set at 10 mb.
Why every time you mount store its goes to mail.que
Why.
Answers your questions.
1. Antivirus, Microsoft Forefront for Exchange Version: 10.1.0746.0 Service
Pack: 1, on testing stage it's in disable mode (FSCUtility.exe / disable)
2. No we don't use Edge Server role (messages transferred directly to smtp
smarthost (Appliance, Baracuda Spam Firewall))
3. No open relay, its internal server
4. Large message, yes as I described above
So far only installed Update Rollup 1 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack
1, Update Rollup 2 After testing in test lab planed to install in few days
on production environment.
Thank you for your attention.

Re: EdgeTransport.exe took 98% CPU time
Hi Arman,
Thanks for your response and the detailed description. I am very glad to
know we have found the root cause and the issue is resolved.
Regarding restricting the message size, I'd like to explain size limits for
messages depend on various settings. Settings can vary across users. You
can customize the settings for the Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003
organization, a specific connector, a specific virtual server, and an
individual user.
For more information, please check following articles:
How to set size limits for messages in Exchange Server
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322679
message size limits in Exchange 2007

Again, thank you for your time and cooperation! Please feel free to contact
us again in the future.
Best regards,
