Relay problem
Hi I have exchange 2003 sp2. My users usually connect via outlook 2003 or
owa and 1 with outlook express. All these users can send mail without a
problem except for a new user which uses imap over ssl vpn tunnel. He can
send via imap on the local network but not from the ssl even though I have
ticket the box saying the smtp server require authentication, I just get the
following error

Is there some reason he's not using Outlook or OWA?

If you want him to be able to use your SMTP server as a relay then
you'll have to either allow his IP address or require authentication.

Since Exchange comes configured to allow authenticated users to realy,
I expect that all he has to do is set up his email client to
authenticate and the problem will go away.

Configuring the client to authenticate /should/ works, but if you have
some sort of filter (like a Cisco PIX with the MailGuard feature
enabled) between the client and server, the EHLO may be rejected and
the cient will never see the 250-AUTH keyword. If that happed the
client won't authenticate.

Check log files on the client and in your SMTP server's log file to
vrify that AUTH is being used.
