Hi we have an installation with 2 exchange 2003 servers in one organisation. One being used as a front-end server. The main server (mailboxes/public folders) is protected with Symantec Mail Security 6.0 for Exchange. Every day (morning) mails seem to get stuck in the smtp queue from the frontend server to the mailbox server. If i do nothing the mails get through (almost all at once) after a couple of hours When i force the connection only a few or no mails get through. Basically all external mails being delivered to the front end server are delivered to the mailbox with a delay that can vary from 5 minutes up to 12 (or more) hours. No poblem with internal mails and mails being sent to the internet If i have a look at the event log of the front server I see that errors like the following are generated : Message delivery to the host '10.4.12.5' failed while delivering to the remote domain 'MAILSERVER.korfina.net' for the following reason: The connection was dropped by the remote host. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. any help/advices is greatly appreciated !!

Is 10.4.12.5 your mailbox server? Is it your front-end server? Is korfina.net your email domain? Have you configured any of your SMTP Virtual Servers (or SMTP Connectors) with a smart host? -- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP MS Exchange FAQ at http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Don't send mail to this address mailto:h.pott@getronics.com Or to these, either: mailto:h.pott@pinkroccade.com mailto:melvin.mcphucknuckle@getronics.com mailto:melvin.mcphucknuckle@pinkroccade.com

But that doesn't speak to the classification of mailserver.korfina.net as a "remote domain". Is that the FQDN of your mailbox server? The domain "korfina.net" doesn't seem to have a MX record. -- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP MS Exchange FAQ at http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Don't send mail to this address mailto:h.pott@getronics.com Or to these, either: mailto:h.pott@pinkroccade.com mailto:melvin.mcphucknuckle@getronics.com mailto:melvin.mcphucknuckle@pinkroccade.com

No. >and the frontend and mailbox server are part of this domain (no >firewall etc. in between ) If the connection between the FE and BE servers isn't reliable you should fix that. The BE server shouldn't be dropping the connection (or actively refusing the connection) from the BE if they're both on the same network switch. -- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP MS Exchange FAQ at http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Don't send mail to this address mailto:h.pott@getronics.com Or to these, either: mailto:h.pott@pinkroccade.com mailto:melvin.mcphucknuckle@getronics.com mailto:melvin.mcphucknuckle@pinkroccade.com

brutus wrote: [ snip ] >any advice on how to check the connectivity between FE / BE >(tool,... ) ? I'd start with a network monitor. Wireshark is pretty easy to download and install. You'll at least be able to see what "dropped" means. -- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP MS Exchange FAQ at http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Don't send mail to this address mailto:h.pott@getronics.com Or to these, either: mailto:h.pott@pinkroccade.com mailto:melvin.mcphucknuckle@getronics.com mailto:melvin.mcphucknuckle@pinkroccade.com
