OWA public folders and security
We recently upgarded to Exchange 2007 from 2003.

I had setup a public folder which my users could get to via an internal
webpage which linked to the public folders via OWA. The user could then
access a public folder simply by clicking on it and they would not be
prompted for a name/password.

I modified this link so it points to the public folders on Exchange 2007 and
the link brings up a page showing all of the public folders. But when the
user clicks on a public folder they get prompted for a domain\name and
password.

How can I make it so, since they are already logged on to the domain, they
are not prompted for a name/password when accessing a public folder via OWA?

Thanks,
Bob

RE: OWA public folders and security
Hello,

Thank you for your post. My name is Robbin Meng, and it is my pleasure to
work with you on this issue!

Please allow me to confirm that my understandings are correct. As I
understand it, the issue is:

After upgrading from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007, when user use a link
to try to open certain public folder which created via OWA before the
domain\name and password window pops up which did not occur on the Exchange
2003 server before upgrade.

If I have misunderstood your concerns please feel free to let me know.

Before we go further, I would like to clarify some questions:

1. How did you setup that "public folder" ?

2. What and where is the " internal webpage " and how does user access that
"Public Folder"?

Can you be more specific with "a public folder which my users could get to
via an internal webpage which linked to the public folders via OWA"? Thank
you!

If you are referring to the "Public Folder" that within your Exchange
server. You can refer to the following article to check the authentication
of the Public Folder, make sure the "Integrated Windows authentication" is
used instead of "Basic authentication (password is sent in clear text)".

How to configure IIS Web site authentication in Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324274/en-us

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your time and cooperation!

Best regards,

RE: OWA public folders and security
Thank you for your reply.

In particular, I am trying to put the necessary URL to the Exchange 2007
public folder in a Sharepoint web part.

In the end the user goes to the internal Sharepoint site, clicks on a link
and the Exchange public folder shows up via the url for owa public folders (I
think it was http://Server/Exchange/public).

So I guess what I need is a direct link in Exchange 2007 to the public
folders and a way to have it show up with prompting for name/password.

Thanks,
Bob

RE: OWA public folders and security
Hi Bob,

Thanks for your response and clarification.

To use the direct link URL on Exchange 2007 to open OWA public folders, you
can try: https://Servername/public (which on Exchange 2003 is
http://Servername/Exchange/public).

Regarding the authentication type, make sure the "Integrated Windows
authentication" is used instead of "Basic authentication (password is sent
in clear text)". Please still refer to the article:

RE: OWA public folders and security
Thank you for the suggestions, however the users are still being prompted for
credentials.

Any additional thoughts would be appreciated.

RE: OWA public folders and security
Let me restate the issue:

I would like anyone to type the necessary url (http://server/public) to be
able to see the public folders on Exchaneg 2007 SP1.

I have tried changing the security to "anonymous" in IIS for the "public"
virtual folder. This did not work.

Thanks,
Bob

Re: OWA public folders and security
I don't believe that you can go directly to Public Folders in E2007 OWA any
more. AFAIK, the only way to access PFs is to log into OWA, then use the
Public Folders button in the navigation bar. The /Public VDir in IIS
Manager and Exchange Management Console is for WebDAV API access only.

Re: OWA public folders and security
Thank you. That would explain my inability to mess with the Vdirectory in
IIS as well.
