Moving Mailboxes with ExMerge in same domain
Hello,

Can ExMerge be used to move mailboxes from one Exchange server to another in
the same domain? Eg. Move mailboxes from Server 1 to Server 2 in Domain A.
For the MS articles I have read, they seem to mention that ExMerge is
primarily used to move/migrate mailboxes from one domain to another, not the
same domain.

I can get the utility to work to create a PST file of a user mailbox, but
when I try to import this PST file into another mailbox on a different
Exchange server, I am asked to select the mailbox to merge into to. It looks
as though a mailbox with the same name has to exist before the PST file can
be merged on Server 2.

I know Exchange has the Exchange Task Wizard to move a mailbox, but you can
only move 4 mailboxes at a time, whereas ExMerge can move more than 4
mailboxes at a time.

Thanks,
Dean

With move mailbox, you could move thousands at one time. It runs a max of 4
threads at a time, but you can run multiple tasks to get around that.
Move mailbox is the way to go.

Re: Moving Mailboxes with ExMerge in same domain
run multiple instances of move mailbox, each with four theads. If you want
to move 20 mailboxes simultaniously, run 5 instances. You are, of course,
limited by the storage on the taget server. You could, in theory, run
hundreds of instances of move mailbox. In the end, you won;t go any faster
than your disk, or networf for that matter, will support.

But keep an eye on your log file drives. You are going to generate a ton.

Re: Moving Mailboxes with ExMerge in same domain
The build in move mailbox is definately the way to go. I have moved over
30,000 users mailboxes this way. As Martin mention you need to make sure
that you have sufficient disk space on the TARGET server for the logs to the
equivalent amount plus a bit extra for a buffer of the size of the mailboxes
you are moving. So if you are moving 20 mailboxes that total 5 Gb then you
should make sure you have more than 5Gb free on the TARGET server. The log
generation on the SOURCE server is minimal.

How many mailboxes are you moving and what are their average size ?

Re: Moving Mailboxes with ExMerge in same domain
Yes, the logs can get you. You'll want to periodically run a backup to
clear the logs.
