[Sql Server 2008 RCO]Where is SSMS ?
Hi there,

a very simple question: I can't find the SSMS component during the Server
2008 RC0 installation process. Is it on a separate download ?

Thanks a lot

Re: [Sql Server 2008 RCO]Where is SSMS ?
Hi Oriane,

SSMS is a Management Tool of SQL Server and yes, it comes with SQL Server
2008 RC0.

However it'll not be installed unless you select it to be installed during
the SQL Server 2008 Setup. You can select it in the Feature Selection pane.
It's listed under the Shared Features list as Management Tools - Basic

Re: [Sql Server 2008 RCO]Where is SSMS ?
Hi Ekrem,

Unfortunately the only options available on the feature selection screen are:

Instance Features
         Database Engine Services
               SQL Server Replication

Shared Features
          SQL Client Connectivity SDK

Redistributable Features

with only Database Engine Services, SQL Server Replication and SQL Client
Connectivity SDK selectable.

The SSMS is not mentioned in the descriptions of any of the selectable
options. Selecting all of them the only manager that gets installed is the
configuration manager.

Is there another way to get the SSMS isntalled?

Re: [Sql Server 2008 RCO]Where is SSMS ?
Then I believe your Setup belongs to a SQL Server 2008 RC0 Express Edition.

It will probably not include SSMSE. I'm downloading it now to have a look.
SQL Server 2005 Express Edition does not ship with SSMSE either. (Express
Edition with Advanced Services does)

I don't think there is an SSMSE for SQL Server 2008 released now. Probably
not.

Re: [Sql Server 2008 RCO]Where is SSMS ?
I've downloaded and checked SQL Server 2008 RC0 Express Edition and in SQL
Server 2008 Setup, it seems there is a Management Tools - Basic (which
includes SSMSE) in the Feature Selection list.

Can you tell me how and where have you had this Setup that you try to run
now?

You can have it from the following link:

Is it possible you chose an upgrade, and/or already have SQL Server 2005
client tools installed?

Re: [Sql Server 2008 RCO]Where is SSMS ?
Yes, please first check if your SQL Server 2008 is an Express Edition as
Ekrem mentioned.

Then if you have SQL Server 2005 Management Studio installed, SQL Server
2008 Management Studio will not be installed. In this case, I recommend
that you first uninstall SQL Server 2005 client tools from add/remove
programs. Click SQL Server 2005, click Remove, only check Workstation
components and follow the wizard to remove it.

I have SSMS 2205 and SSMS 2208 CTP6 (november release). Do I have also to
remove it ?

If you have CTP6 installed, uninstall it first. The release notes say that
upgrading from CTP6 is supported, but there are many who have had problems
doing that. If you have databases you want to keep, you can attach them to
RC0 once you have it installed.

There is absolutely no reason to uninstall anything of SQL 2005.

I don't have CTP6 server but only CT6 SSMS. And now on the same machine, one
RC0 server.

So you don't agree with Charles ?
But in that case, there is no option to install SSMS RC0...

Re: [Sql Server 2008 RCO]Where is SSMS ?
Hi Erland,
If his intention was just to install SSMS of SQL Server 2008 CTP6 on the
server, the original SQL Server 2005 client tools should be first removed.
Per my test, with SQL Server 2005 SSMS installed, SQL Server 2008 SSMS
could not be installed. However he does not need to remove SQL Server 2005
database engine and other components. Maybe this situation will be changed
once SQL Server 2008 RTM is officially released.

This behaviour also what is told in SQL Server 2008 Readme. Which is, SQL
Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008 Client Tools can not be installed side by
side.

No it is to install SSMS RC0.

I've removed SSMS 2005 but I can't still install SSMS RC0. Do I have to
reboot ?

I have one machine where I have both SSMS tools installed, but to be honest,
I don't know how I did it. On another machine I was unable to install 2008
SSMS without uninstalling the 2005 tools.

I've two machines with both of them there. On my laptop, I don't recall
in which order I originally installed them, as I installed both SQL 2005
and SQL 2008 when I set up the machine. But I've uninstalled CTP6 and
installed RC0 since them.

On the other machine, I upgraded an SQL 2000 instance, and I already both
the SQL 2000 and the SQL 2005 tools there. Now, this upgrade has still not
completed successfully, but that's an issue with the engine. The tools
are there just fine, as are the SQL 2005 tools.

Hey guys! See below what I've found in the SQL Server Setup Help (RC0' s
"F:\x86\help\1033\s10ch_setup.chm" Check out for "Considerations for
Installing SQL Server Management Tools" under the "Installing SQL Server
2008" topic)

"SQL Server 2008 Management Tools can run side-by-side on the same computer
with earlier versions of SQL Server Management Tools."

It seems that this behaviour has changed since it was not possible to
install the Client Tools of 2005 and 2008 side by side in earlier CTPs and
this was declared in the Readme file in the root of the media.

Well all this seems rather unclear to me as I have on the same machine SSMS
2005 and SSMS 2008 CTP6.

Nevertheless, I can't install SSMS 2008 RC0 anywhere :-(

Re: [Sql Server 2008 RCO]Where is SSMS ?
Well, as I told you yesterday, I downloaded SQL Server 2008 RC0 Express
Edition as well and there was Management Tools in its Setup. And you say you
can't see Management Tools option on Feature Selection in SQL Server 2008
RC0 Setup. I'd not surprised if it'd be there and raise an error during the
installation however you claim that it's not even exist in the Setup. This
is a bit confusing.

I asked you how and from where have you had this copy of the Setup? And you
didn't reply to this question. Because I'm not sure if it's RC0. For
example, what's the setup's file size? Is this the Express Edition or what?

For instance the SQL Server 2008 RC0 Express Edition that I've downloaded is
100.693KB and it's file name is "SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe" and the one that I
work on for test porpuses is the Evaluation Edition "SQLFULL_ENU_x86.iso"
and its file size is 1.247.982KB

Also, do you have a change to install this setup in another test machine? Or
will you be able to set up a Virtual Machine to test it?

I've downloaded two setups, the first is SQLEXPR2008_x86_FRA, size is 118
432 Kb (Express Edition for French language), the second is SQLFULL_ENU_x86,
size is 952 213 Kb. They were downloaded from download.microsoft.com.

I 've successfully installed the server with one new instance of SQL Express
2008 (SQLEXPR2008_x86_FRA,) on two machines:
- one w2k3 server, which already has two instances of Sql 2005 (one for
MOSS), SSMS 2005 and SSMS 2008 CTP6.
- the second server is on Vista SP1 Ultimate, which already has Sql 2005
Express server and SSMS 2005 Express.

Then I've tried to install SSMS 2008 RC0 with SQLEXPR2008_x86_FRA and
SQLFULL_ENU_x86 on both machines. Then I've uninstalled SSMS 2005 Express on
Vista and try to install again SSMS 2008 RC0, unsuccessfully.

I don't see why the RC0 from Microsoft download site should be different for
you and me. Moreover, if by chance the file has been incorrectly downloaded,
I doubt that I could have succeeded in running the set up.

> Also, do you have a change to install this setup in another test machine?
I've also tried on XP SP1 machine, unsuccessfully.
> Or will you be able to set up a Virtual Machine to test it?
No

Thanks again for your support !

I can't since I need at least one client for the Sql Server 2008 Express
Edition RC0 instance on my w2k3 server.
But on my Vista, there is no more CT6, no more SSMS, juste one 2008 RC0
instance and one 2005 Express instance.

Re: [Sql Server 2008 RCO]Where is SSMS ?
Ok now. On my Vista, I reran the set up with the Enterprise Edition and now
I can see the Client Management on the shared features. To be franck I don't
remember if I have tried with the Entreprise before...
So it is currently installing. I cross my fingers...

Re: [Sql Server 2008 RCO]Where is SSMS ?
Our Setup files' sizes are different because of the languages. The setup
files I mentioned were in English and you say that yours are French. I don't
exactly know what cause these size differences but it happens and I don't
think your files are corrupt either otherwise they would not be running and
even if they'd run they'd crashed with weird error messages...

As far as I understand, you have three machines that you are trying to
install SQL Server 2008 X (whichever) Edition instance.

First, you successfully install it on your W2k3 and Vista SP1. Then you try
again and it failes or you can't find Management Tools on the Features List
or what? If there is an error, let us know the error message (as it is pls)

Also, I'm not sure if you are aware or not but the RC0 version of SQL Server
2008 should be used only for test purposes. This version of SQL Server 2008
is not appropriate for production environments. Somehow I feel these are not
test machines that you are trying to install this version of SQL Server? But
somehow you are using those machines just like a test machine because you
continually are installing and uninstalling SQL Server things?

I'm no using it on a production env, but on a dev machine, since I need asap
the FILESTREAM functionality.

> Somehow I feel these are not test machines that you are trying to install
> this version of SQL Server?
No since my company is rather small, I don't have the opportunity to test on
a test machine since we are not really outnumbered with our Windows
servers... On the other side, I could use virtual server but it is requiring
RAM and CPU and we don't have much of both.

> But somehow you are using those machines just like a test machine because
> you continually are installing and uninstalling SQL Server things?
No the point is the lack of documentation. If I had read this two days ago:
http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/archive/2008/06/10/sql-server-2008-express-rc0.aspx, I
would have had no problem. I would have understood that the Express version
does not contain SSMS but that is is available on the "Advanced Services"
Express one.

But as you say, it is only a release candidate and I can't complain.

Now I've installed SSMS 2008 RC0 on my Vista and on my dev server, so it is
a happy ending.

Thanks again for your help.

Re: [Sql Server 2008 RCO]Where is SSMS ?
Hi Oriane,
I hope that you were in a test environment. Since SQL Server 2008 RTM has
not been released, currently all SQL Server 2008 RCx Editions are not
supported. My suggestions here were based on my test before that was based
on SQL Server 2008 CTP6. Regarding your current issue, it may require your
more tests. I recommend that you also remove the following programs from
Add/Remove programs before you install your SQL Server 2008 RC0:
Microsoft SQL Server Native Client
Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files(English)
Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer
These components are also client components that may fail your SQL Server
2008 client tools installation.

Best regards,
