Apparently, there is no simple SP 2 which one can apply to the Express version. Instead we are redirected to the full product install. I gather that the appropriate way to SP SQL Express is to install over the existing application. The attempt to install over the existing installation failed with: "SQL Server Setup could not connect to the database service for server configuration. The error was: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Shared Memory Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2]. Refer to server error logs and setup logs for more information. For details on how to view setup logs, see "How to View Setup Log Files" in SQL Server Books Online." So apparently the setup did not check to see if the protocol it was going to use was enabled?? Anyway, it updated the version of the files and enough else that re-running the SQL Express install says there is nothing to do. And trying to use "Change" from Add/Remove programs has it looking for a SqlRun_SQL.msi which the broken install must have deleted in its cleanup. The only reason to have started this exercise was to install the MS08-040 security patch. That will not install since is it believes the previous upgrade did not complete. Now what? Is there a way to correct the installation? Thanks, mmr
