Weight Average Summary Task of Custom field
Hi.

I"m trying to have my custom field to roll up but to summary as a weighted
average by the Effort (Work). The same thing % work complete would roll up.

Unfortunately the only method is MS project has is simple average. this is
distorting my comparaison with the % work complete.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: Weight Average Summary Task of Custom field
Try using another column for the weight and then one for weight * Percent
complete. Rolling up the two as a sum will allow you to calculate the
weighted percent complete at the summary task level.

Re: Weight Average Summary Task of Custom field
Jack,

I tried that but the problem is how to come up with the weights. I want to
be able to get the weight but there's no predefined field for it. I know the
weight= Work/Total Work for Summary task being calculated. But how do you get
that to autocalculate for each task in a new custom column? Also in a wbs
with multiple level (mulitiple summary tasks, the weight will change
depending on which level the rollup is occurring.
I thought about using two to three other columns and it ends up being a
little messy.

thanks fo the help again. Sorry for the other post. I noticed I was in the
wrong forum after posting it.

Re: Weight Average Summary Task of Custom field
Are you sure that you are not going to a lot of trouble to calculate
something that you don't even need, or even something which has no meaning
or usefulness, or pirpose, or even a definition in the PM context?
It is certainly not necessary to have the "weights" to monitor and report
progress.
How will you use it even if you have it?

Re: Weight Average Summary Task of Custom field
hi Trevor

I do have a custom formula I'm using in a custom field wich is rolling the
some % complete from sub-tasks to the summary tasks. Same thing you do have a
% Work Complete autocalculate the rolls up to summary tasks.

I just want to compare apple and apple. % work complete is weighted
average. I want my custom field to also weight average while rolling up.
Just using the given "simple average" would not be comparing apple to apple.
Why I'm trying to do this compare? This custom field has the expected %
work complete. I just want to accurately compare this on summary tasks.

Thanks
Nash
