I have a number of Outlook archive files (.pst). Is there an easy way to access information from them other than by using Outlook? If not, is the way to extract data in text form (so that it can be processed by other utilities) to open the archive using Outlook, and save all the messages to file - is there a way to also get the full headers?

There is no way to extract data from a PST without using MAPI which, for all practical purposes, means having Outlook installed. One tool you might use is Microsoft's MAPI Editor, a recently released, free utility that you can find at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=55fdffd7-1878-4637-9808-1e21abb3ae37&DisplayLang=en MAPI Editor will convert an entire PST into XML. There are also various commercial products available to extract data, some of which will even synthesize message headers for you. I am a developer of some such tools which you can find on my Web site at http://www.maclean.com/Outsmart/Outsmart.html Pete Maclean

The fact that it's free enhances it's attraction. Perhaps you should ask Diane Poremsky if she'd include a link to your site on one of the Tools pages of slipstick.com. You have some interesting and what appear to be useful tools. -- Brian Tillman

I'll contact Diane about that. Pete
