saving data   

hi. whats the different methods in saving a database i'm alternathing 
between
laptop& desktop and external hard drive.losing data here and there.
having windows xp and working with access 2003.
will "briefcase"  help me by the way whats the difference between
replication and synchronizing

By losing data do you mean you have bad hardware, or you are accidently
overwriting data, or are you actaully leaving you data behind in (like
I left my laptop at the airport).

Replication creates (two) special copies of a database on different
computers. When the two computers have a data link, you can synch them
and the data between them will become identical. It's not a backup
system but a way to keep data concurrent allowing you to not lose
changed data in one db by overwriting it with the other. If that is
your problem, this is your solution.

I'm really not sure what you are trying to do. You will have to be more
specific. Data backup or replication?

back up isn't the problem.the question is sometimes working with "laptop"
sometimes working with "desktop". is "replication" the way to synch.
or will i have to-do a "master file" any know how will be greatly 
appreciated

In replication, you create a "design master" -- the place where you
make structural changes to the database. From the DM, you create any
number of replicas. Each of the replicas can be edited in its own
right. Periodically, you synchronize between the replicas to bring
them up to date with the changes (edits, additions, deletions) that
have been made in the other replicas.

There are a number of gotchas to setting up replication and making it
work. Foremost is the requirement that synchronization can only take
place between computers that can communicate with each other. From a
practical perspective, this means that a notebook that is periodically
connected to the "mother ship" LAN is a good candidate for
replication. You may *not* transfer the database between sites using
email, floppy, CD, etc.
