Hi Ed,
Look into the compatibility options, and set them to the default for Word 2007.
(Office button > Word Options > Advanced... then, look at the very bottom)
Also make sure the whole text is formatted as English.
(It sounds as if the apostrophe might be interpreted as an exotic/Asian character, and that messes up the spacing)
If that does not solve it: What's the font?
