Microsoft Office Word can't open the thesaurus.
I am running Word 2003 on a new Dell desktop with Win XP Pro SP2. Every time
I try to use the thesaurus from Word or Outlook (or any Office component) I
get the error message:

"Microsoft Office Word can't open the thesaurus.
Microsoft Office Word cannot install the necessary files due to Windows
Installer error 1606.
Feature ID not registered."

I've uninstalled and reinstalled Office... even selecting to install ALL
components whether I needed them or not without any success.

I've downloaded nd installed the update to the Windows Installer in the
event that was the problem... no go. I still get the same error.

If I click enough times at the "OK" button on the error message the
thesaurus starts up and works fine. It just seems to choke on the initial
startup of the thesaurus.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

Re: Microsoft Office Word can't open the thesaurus.
Hi Bob,

Error '1606' can mean that some part of the app has become confused when it can't find something it's looking for in an expected
location. It can be a missing registry entry (especially if you've used a 3rd party "cleanup" program) a damaged MS Office 2003
cache folder or interference from an Add-in.

Assuming the basic language for your document and the Windows language are set to the same flavor, if you start Word 2003 using
Office safe mode (hold ctrl key while starting Word) do you have the same problem? If not, then see if
the steps in this article help.

If you use Start=>Programs=>Accessories=>System Tools=>Disk Cleanup is the 'Office setup files' value shown as zero and or is the
C:\MSOCache folder empty? If so that could be a damaged Office installation that may need the use of a utility to correct.

A '1606' error can also come from a number of things that confuse the installer program <g>. If the prior article doesn't help and
the MSOCache/Setup files appear to be there see if the article here helps.
