Centuury Schoolbook -- needs a section symbol
I like to use the font "Century Schoolbook" for legal pleadings. It's
the right size and typeface to comply with the rules, be easy to read,
and look good.

But it doesn't have a section symbol! Is there a way I can use XP
Home to change the schwa symbol to a section symbol?

I find the section symbol at 00A7 (as expected) in my copy of Century
Schoolbook.

Re: Centuury Schoolbook -- needs a section symbol
From the Insert Symbol dialog? You can assign a keyboard shortcut if
desired. See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/InsertSpecChars.htm

00A7 hex = 0167 decimal.

Press and hold the Alt key, press the 0 1 6 7 keys in sequence,
release the Alt key.

You have to use the numeric keypad (not the row above the alpha
keyboard), and NumLock must be on.

Also,

a.. If you know the character code for a Unicode character, you do not
need to open the Symbol dialog box. Type the Unicode hexadecimal
character code in the document, and then press ALT+X.

Unicode character code for the section symbol is 00A7.

Alt-X, Alt+0167 -- whatever! But I still only get a schwa. There is
NO section symbol. I'm probably using an older version of Century

Re: Centuury Schoolbook -- needs a section symbol
A schwa is not a standard ANSI character (in the 32-255 range), so either
your font has already been modified, or you have a special phonetic version
of Century Schoolbook.

Re: Centuury Schoolbook -- needs a section symbol
I am at a loss to understand or explain the cause of the problem you
report. However, leaving that aside and actually answering your original
question (at long last [;-)]).

There is the little-known "Private Character Editor". To access it, click
the desktop Start button; then click Run and type "eudcedit" (omit the
quotes) in the slot. There is a decent help file for it accessible in the
usual way.

Of course, you have recourse to various font editors, e.g. FontLab.

And, yes, I'm still very puzzled over the problem's causes. I have
checked various possibilities and tested with several different Word
versions. The only idea I can offer, and have not thoroughly
investigated, is roughly parallel to Suzanne's thought-the font you are
using might have a non-standard encoding: some code points have had other
glyphs mapped rather than standard ANSI mapping.

Do you experience the same problem when you use other fonts, e.g. Times
New Roman or Arial? Do you have the problem with PostScript,TrueType and
Open Type?

Hi people,

I'm feeling a bit guilty. I recall now, dimly, that about 10
years ago I hacked a font to get it to display some special characters
used in an American Indian language I was working on. It was just so
I could get good copy to make books.
Ahem -- it seems I must have hacked my Century Schoolbook. :-(
Too bad I didn't give it another name -- Wasco Century Schoolbook
would have been appropriate.
I have no idea how I did it, or how to rename the font for just
those purposes. Perhaps I'll need to pack up this font and save it
someplace special, and dig out a recent version of Century Schoolbook.
Would it be available on MS's site? Or in what original program
CD should I look to find the original version with the section symbol?

Re: Centuury Schoolbook -- needs a section symbol
According to
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/fonts/font.aspx?FID=53&FNAME=Century+Schoolbook&FVER=2.35,
the Century Schoolbook family was/is supplied with Access 97 SR2, Creative
Writer 2, Office 2000 Premium, Office 4.3 Professional, Office 97 Small
Business Edition SR2, Office 97 SR1a, Office Professional Edition 2003,
PhotoDraw 2000, Picture It! 98, Publisher 2000, Publisher 97, Publisher 98,
and TrueType Font Pack, so if you have the CDs for any of those, you should
be able to reintall it.

Re: Centuury Schoolbook -- needs a section symbol
Try here:

https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=697a2c2b-9eff-4d4c-8655-4da3acd8aa16&displaylang=en

The family is on the Office 2000 CD. If you have a version with
Publisher, It is on the same CD as Publisher. There are the usual four
files. The naming scheme is idiosyncratic:
censcbk.ttf regular or Roman
schlbkb.ttf bold
schlbkbi.ttf bold Italic
schlbki.ttf Italic

On my CD set, it is on CD2 in the cab file.

Let us know.
