Is there a standalone word pad? and where can I get a free download? thank
you in advance. Have .doc files that won't open.

WordPad is part of the Windows operating system - if you have 
Windows, you should have WordPad. It's not available for download.

Microsoft Word (the subject of this newsgroup) is definitely NOT 
available as a free download.

You might want to ask in word.docmanagement (the more "general" group) 
about you *.doc files that won't open. Be sure to mention with which 
application they were created, which version of Windows you have, and 
whether you have Microsoft Office or Word.

Hi William,

I'm not sure I'm following your question.  Windows Wordpad would be under
 Start=>Programs=>Accessories

Microsoft Office Word is a paid program, but you can get a 60 day trial from http://trymicrosoftoffice.com
