Question on restaring paragraph numbering
I've been successfully using the technique for outline numbering but have run
into a situation where the restart numbering isn't doing what I want.

In this sequence things work fine:

Index 1 (I)
Index 2 (A)
Index 3 (1)

In this sequence things aren't so good:

Index 1 (I)
Index 6 (a) <---
Index 2 (B) <--- should be A
Index 3 (1)

The document I'm working with does not always go down the index chain
sequentially (e.g. index 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.). I know that sounds really
screwy; it's just I'm stretching outline numbering a little.

My basic question is:

If all the levels are set to restart numbering on the previous level AND in
the document there is an intervening lower level in the flow, does it screw
up the restart?

In the tests I've run it doesn't matter how many of the lower level entries
occur, the restart is off by 1. For example, these two sequences:

Index 1 (I)
Index 6 (a) <---
Index 2 (B) <--- should be A
Index 3 (1)

Index 1 (I)
Index 6 (a) <---
Index 6 (b) <---
Index 2 (B) <--- should be A
Index 3 (1)

Both have index 2 off by 1 on the restart.

What I suspect someone will tell me is that outline numbering goes a bit
whaco when it doesn't see a nice descending level sequence in the document.

Re: Question on restaring paragraph numbering
Word expects no "gaps" when you apply outline numbering, that is, levels not
explicitly applied to text are assumed, meaning that numbering increments.
For example, the following happens if you apply numbered Heading 1--Heading
3 paragraphs in the "incorrect" order:

1 Heading 1
1.1.1 Heading 3
1.2 Heading 2 <-- A previous Heading 2 paragraph is assumed because this
                                   paragraph follows Heading 3.

Thanks so much. As I suspected, Word doesn't like skipping when going down
the levels.

I've gone ahead and done manual resets when this occurs and will look for
another solution. Since the documents do follow the basic expectations of
outlining for the first 5 levels, that will be fine. For levels 6-8 I'll
probably do some list numbering instead.

Appreciate your post.
