I can't choose a connector because they're in gray.   

I cannot choose a connector as all the connectors in the connectors window 
are in gray. How do I turn them to black so that I can choose the connectors?

What version of Word? In some versions, shapes must be in a drawing canvas 
before you can use connectors.
