how can i create an upward-pointing arrow with keyboard shortcuts?   
like the ones you can create that pointright or left by typing -->..is it 
possible?

Yes. Insert the arrow (from the Wingdings font) using Insert | Symbol. 
Select it, go to Tools | AutoCorrect Options, select the "Formatted text" 
radio button, and type in the text you want your arrow to replace. Or you 
could assign a keyboard shortcut to the character in the Symbol dialog.
