Designing a patch   
I want to be able to make a design like this patch, artwork in the middle 
with text around the edges using MS Word. How do I do it?

You can use WordArt to get the text to look similar. Look here:

Scroll way down. It is for Publisher but the WordArt is the same in all Office 
programs.

Draw a circle, Fill, Fill effects, picture tab, browse to your picture. You 
might need to check >>Lock picture aspect ratio<<
