help with numbering- heading stylees   
I  have a project to creat template where heading 1 numbering starts at

Lower level numbering is not restart.  I have it set to restart after the 
higher level, e.g. at level 2 it is set to restart after level 1.

Did you link each level to a distinct style, and are you applying those 
styles?

Thanks for taking the time to reply.  

But I've given up.  Styles were easy and worked in a straight forward manner 
in the past.  However now they are far from being intuitive.

Styles and outline numbering have worked the same way for several versions 
now.
