what invokes Word 2007 document recovery?   

My coworker has complained that he gets files showing up in the Document 
Recovery pane in Word 2007 with frequency. So much so that he has been 
ignoring them. He said he feels he properly exits Word and isn't experiencing 
"Word needs to close" type messages.

He did comment that he often will use the hibernate feature on his laptop a 
lot when he is traveling, when documents of are open. Is there any chance 
that hibernate might be a culprit? Does it make a difference if he is logged 
into our network remotely when hibernating? He also has been experiencing 
this with Excel 2007. 

Sorry I cannot be more specific than this. Any ideas on this would be 
appreciated.

Word looks for *.asd files in the AutoRecover files folder when Word is 
opened. If there are any there, Word presents them for recovery. 
(AutoRecover location can be found by clicking the Office button, Word 
Options, Advanced tab, File Locations (near the bottom of the Advanced 
settings), AutoRecover files location. In Vista, it should be something like 
C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP.

.asd files are created any time that there are unsaved changes and xx 
minutes have elapsed since the last user save or since the last time the 
.asd file was saved. .asd files are deleted when the user does a save or 
when the file is closed. If Word crashes or otherwise doesn't close 
ceremoniously, then .ads files get left behind.

If the AutoRecover location is unavailable when Word closes or otherwise 
tries to do housecleaning, then .asd files get stranded. So, best to make 
sure that the location is on a local drive.
