Cannot save changes to normal.dot (no Adobe Acrobat toolbar)
I've been trying to save a macro to be associated with a custom tool bar
icon, but Word won't allow me to save it. The computer is running Windows XP
Pro with Office 2007. Adobe Acrobat 8.1 is installed, but I've followed all
the recommendations for removing the Acrobat tool and the applied the
registry tweaks, and the issue still remains. I've also already reinstalled
Word with and without Acrobat present. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Re: Cannot save changes to normal.dot (no Adobe Acrobat toolbar)
It is primarily Adobe Acrobat 7 (the earliest versions) that caused the
problem with Office 2002/3 preventing Word from saving its normal template.
Acrobat 8.1.2 is compatible with Word 2007 and its add-in should not prevent
Word from saving its normal template normal.dotm and is reqiuired to provide
its full range of tools when creating PDF files from Word..

See http://www.gmayor.com/installing_macro.htm.

Word 2007 only allows macros to be added to the QAT (Quick Access Toolbar).
If you want to use an add-in toolbar you must create that toolbar in an
earlier version of Word http://www.gmayor.com/Toolbars_in_word_2007.htm

If this doesn't cover the problem, please explain exactly what you are
trying to do (the steps).

Re: Cannot save changes to normal.dot (no Adobe Acrobat toolbar)
Hi A.J.

Are you specifically choosing Normal.dot or trying to save to the default Normal template in Word 2007, which is Normal.DotM.

Are you getting error messages or ???

Re: Cannot save changes to normal.dot (no Adobe Acrobat toolbar)
Thanks for the clarification. I am trying to save the default Normal template
in Word 2007, which is in fact Normal.DotM. The specific problem I'm having
is that I can't save a new macro. I can create a custom macro and use that
same macro during a single Word session, but it will not preserve the
settings upon exiting Word. I've tried using "save all" as mentioned in other
posts and trying to edit the template by opening it directly, but it still
won't save. There are no error messages being displayed or logged in
conjunction with this problem Also of note, this is the only computer to have
this problem out of seven near identical workstations.

I had original thought this issue was due to the Acrobat Toolbar, but as
mentioned before, that issue was resolved in an update and the newest version.

Again, the issue at hand is that I cannot save changes to the default normal
template in Word 2007, particularly when trying to save a custom macro.

Thanks,

Re: Cannot save changes to normal.dot (no Adobe Acrobat toolbar)
Hi A.J.,

Which dialog are you examining to see if the macro is retained?
In View=>Macros be sure the 'look in' list is set to show all documents and templates.

If it's not there then try saving from
   Developer=>Visual Basic=>Save
after locating the module that holds your macro and to be sure it's in Normal.dotm (and that it's the only Normal.dotm being 'found'
by Word.

As Graham points out, for Word 2007 macros assigned to toolbars are for the Quick Access Toolbar, not the ribbon. If you're in

  Office Button=>Word Options=>Customize

and choose the 'Macros' choice can you add it to the Quick Access Toolbar there? If so, is the Quick Access toolbar choice over the
top right column for the Quick Access Toolbar, Normal.dotm or for the current document? Each of those can have their own portions
of the Quick Access Toolbar.

As to 'custom buttons' the choices for Word 2007 are the 216 choices available for macros in the Modify button of the Customize
dialog plus the letters A-Z.
