Type in Russian
Hi,

I have a user that would like to be able to type in both Russian and English
in Word 2007 running on a Vista laptop configured with UK regional settings,
is this possible please?

Regards,

Stuart.

Re: Type in Russian
If he has Russian fonts installed, and he sets the Windows Regional settings
to include Russian (and it would probably be easier to use if he has a
Russian/English keyboard or a separate Russian keyboard) then he can type in
both Russian and English. He will probably need the Russian proofing
dictionary
http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/prodinfo/language/proofingtools.mspx
to help himj spell check what he has typed.

Sure, no problem. Vista has Russian support out of the box.
He just needs to install a Russian keyboard from "Control Panel" - "Clock
Language and Region" - "Change keyboards or other input methods"
(or "Control Panel" in "Classic view" - "Regional and Language Options",
"Keyboards and Language" tab)
"Change keyboards" button then "Add" button, select "Russian", then "OK"
twice.

Yes, it's easy as Mihai noted. It is NOT necessary to install Russian fonts:
Cyrillic support is already present in fonts, one can say go to an Internet-cafe in Tokio :) and using a Japanese Windows XP read
normally Russian sites such as http://anekdot.ru, and
it is not necessary to set the Windows Regional settings to include Russian.

One just need (as one does does for German or French typing) add Russian keyboard layout.
How to do it is explained (for different Windows versions it's done differently) in the section

                    "Typing Russian on any keyboard"
 of the instructional site
"Cyrillic (Russian): instructions for Windows and Internet":
http://RusWin.net

Same section has achapter about MS Word ("Fonal notes") and also covers an activation (for those who need it) of an alternative
Russian layout
(Windows allows to have several keyboard layouts for one language) called Phonetic -
Russian letters are located where phonetically similar English are:

A-A, E-E, O-O, K-K,..., Russian 'F' - F, ...

Why???

There is _nothing_ better, easier, faster that regular _system_ input right in the palce you need it -
in MS Word (as the Question states), in e-mail, etc.

Nowadays Microsoft (as well as Mac and Linux) offers to have _several_ Keyboard Layouts for
one language, so it takes 2 minutes (one-time job) to add Phonetic layout to Windows and then
type - using _system_ keyboard - in the same mode as the site you mentioned -
A-A, О-О, К-К, Е-Е,...

It's what I wrote about in my message above - how to activte _system_ leyboard support for Russian
to type - in the place you need it - using Standard or Phonetic layout.

Common sense :) - and the way question was asked ("... in MS Word") tells us that _system_
input can not be compared to any other "input control method" (site/program/plagin)

**************

And the above is true even if your site would be free of _problems_ - system input is still
100 times better - but in your case the site has serious problems -
try to input there the following (normal, every day use) string:

rajon shodil vyuchil Windows XP
:)

One has to contantly "trying to recognize" such words - and Russian language is very rich! -
to make sure one will apply some "work-around"!
Plus problems with Latin text
Sorry, but it's bad, very bad input idea...
:(
