Open Word for Windows 2.0 equations in 2007?
I have some old technical articles that I wrote in Word for Windows
2.0. I now use Word 2007. 2007 opens these old files just fine, but
it doesn't seem to recognize the equations that are embedded. It just
draws a box on the screen where the equation was. Is there some way
to get these equations back?

Did you keep your old Word for Windows 2.0 installation? If so, can you use
it to save as .rtf format instead?

Did you use the Equation editor in Word 2, or EQ fields in Word 2, for your
equations?

I just tried
 a. saving a document from Word 2.0c in .doc and .rtf format
 b. opening in Word 2007. Word 2007 complained about the .doc format because
it can no longer open the format (according to its message) - i.e. it's not
just the equations that are causing problems. However, it opened the .rtf
version just fine.

if you don't still have Word 2.0, how much stuff do you have? If it's just a
document or two I may be able to convert here if you want (no guarantees!)

Re: Open Word for Windows 2.0 equations in 2007?
No, I no longer have WFW 2.0. And I'm pretty sure that I used the
equation editor in Word 2.

I had the same problem as you opening the Word 2 document in 2007, and
found, on the MS website, that I had to add a registry key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Security\FileOpenBlock]
"FilesBeforeVersion"=dword:00000000

Then, the document opened fine, but without the equations displayed.
They are there, though. When I save the file as text and open it in
Notepad, I see equations in the form:

e sub i`=`mu sub i over {lambda sub i`+`mu sub i},
~~i`=`1,~2

Re: Open Word for Windows 2.0 equations in 2007?
Yes, I had the impression that Word 2007 couldn't open Word 2 stuff at all,
but I made the registry change, opened my simple Word 2 example, and the
equation appeared.

When you open your document, if you click Alt-F9, do you see fields such as
{ EMBED Equation } ?

If so, try selecting one, right click and with any luck you will see an
Equation Object option, leading to a convert option where you can select
Equation 3.0 format. If not, I wonder whether
 a. I still have the old object (I think I installed over an older Office
installation) or
 b. the Equation Object is an option in SETUP and you didn't install it - in
whch case you should be able to modify your installation.
