This problem has recently surfaced... When I click on the Word icon, it opens to a blank page on the right and show me some file names of Word documents on the left and then abruptly shuts down!
The usual causes are: 1. Misbehaving add-in. 2. Corrupted Normal.dot. 3. Corrupted registry entry (usually the Data key). This article describes how to troubleshoot the problem: http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm (My first guess would be #2. Solution: rename or delete Normal.dot. In Windows Explorer, you will probably need to set it to show hidden/system files in order to find Normal.dot to rename/delete it.) -- Herb Tyson MS MVP Author of the Word 2007 Bible Blog: http://word2007bible.herbtyson.com Web: http://www.herbtyson.com "Ted" wrote in message news:DB5635AF-5CF2-46B6-BA0C-C722AC2E28A2@microsoft.com... > This problem has recently surfaced... > > When I click on the Word icon, it opens to a blank page on the right and > show me some file names of Word documents on the left and then abruptly > shuts > down! > >

Hi Terry, I'm working on the solutions in both responses....can you tell me what is 'a possible dead mapped drive in Explorer' and how that impacts on it and the 'to do'. I have tried implementing the fixes that got outlined in the weblink. I click on a Word document and it opens and closes abruptly - you can still see there are files llisted on the left hand side when it briefly opens with the blurb about "Word has recovered the following....." In Windows Explorer you set up drive mapping to a drive that no longer exists. Sounds more like a possible printer driver problem. Have you got a compatible printer driver installed and set as the Windows default? Possibly it is corrupt or out of date?
