Disaster Please Help
Hi,

I have just upgraded from Exchange 2003 SP1 to SP2. After the upgrade the
Private Store refuses to mount (error with inconsistent database). Tried
the eseutil /p command but every time quit with different error. I have
gone through the Event log and there are not warnings or error prior the
update and the previous night backup was successfull. Restoring the backup
also does not help, still with error message when I try to mount the store.
BTW the backup is clean and does not have any error.

I plan to do the following.

1) Reinitialize the Private Store to blank. This would allow user to
continue to use their email.
2) Install another Exchange 2003 SP1(with different IP and servername but in
the same forest) and try to mount the Private Store here. This will give me
time try repair and exmerge the mail box.

Will this plan work? Thanks.

Regards,
Kueh.

Are you sure that the problem wouldn't have shown up if you'd just
restarted the services?

Did you make a backup of the database *before* you installed SP2? Did
the backup complete successfully?

>Tried
>the eseutil /p command but every time quit with different error.

Repairing the database is the LAST thing you want to do, not the
first!

If the database was inconsistent then there was probably a problem
with the log files. What events do you see (or *did* you see before
you repaired the database) in the Applications Log? Did you see any
log files being replayed? Did they all replay?

Saying that there were "different errors" without saying what the are
isn't very helpful.

>I have
>gone through the Event log and there are not warnings or error prior the
>update and the previous night backup was successfull.

Good. It wasn't a "brick level" backup, was it?

Were there errors AFTER applying SP2? If so, what were they? Not that
it's going to help very much. Repairing the database probably killed
any chance of replaying the log files.

Yes, it will.

No. At least not right away. You won't be able to connect the
mailboxes to the users because they'll already have a mailbox
assigned. And, because the legacyExchangeDN value in the restored
database is identical to the one in the AD you won't be able to
reconnect the mailboxes to the users until you delete the mailbox
they're using. You can create NEW users and connect the mailbox to the
new user, though.

Re: Disaster Please Help
Hi,

Restart the services countless of times and still the same problem. I just
restore again and before I did anything I ran the eseutil /mh to check the
status and it shows that the database is in inconsitent state. Why is this
so when the backup is completed with any error? No amount of eseutil /p done
allows it to be brought to a state where I can mount the database.

Regards,
Kueh.

Well, that makes sense; it's a computer. If you give it the same data
and repeat the same steps, the results will be the same.

Because the backup is made while the file's still being updated. After
the database is restored, mounting the database will trigger the
replaying of the log files to return the database to a consistent
state.

>No amount of eseutil /p done

Stop trying to repair the database. If it didn't work the first time
it's unlikely to work the second time (or the third, fourth, fifth,
etc.).

Hi,

What should I do then? I need to mount the database even just to exmerge

You could post some of the errors you found in the Applications Log
when you first discovered the problem.

So far all anyone knows is that "it doesn't work".

Re: Disaster Please Help
the restore problem is a very known issues with exchange.
after investigating the issue i found a way to do it.

1. first in the exchange folder Exchsrvr\DBData delete all the logs
files.
2. Do restore using this KB
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;258243
3. Mount the store.

good lock

Without knowing what the problem is, it's hard to say whether this is
a "very known issue" or a problem specific to this one machine.

>1. first in the exchange folder Exchsrvr\DBData delete all the logs
>files.

That's not the best advice. You'll lose the information in the
interval between the last backup and the time of the failure. It *may*
me good advice if the cause of the problem is a missing or damaged log
file, there's no way to recover the information, and the data loss is
acceptable. But so far there's been no information about the cause of
the problem, so giving advice that will lose information isn't the
right thing to do -- yet.

If the data loss is acceptable and the cause of the problem cannot e
determined, then *moving* the log files to another directory would be
a safe course of action.

But, for the time being, there's no information given that would lead
to the conclusion that there's a problem with the log files.

Re: Disaster Please Help
have you tried some third party software.
For example exchange recovery from office recovery can "exmerge" data from
an offline store. So you don't need it to be fully consistent.
But it's a good idea to post some errors.

Hi,

Does Office Recovery for Exchange work for corrupted database?. I mean, I
would expect to loose some mail and even some mail box but to loose the
whole system is very painfull. Thanks.

Re: Disaster Please Help
Hi Rich,

I assumption at the moment points to two possible causes. The backup
software Veritas 9.1 SP1 could be the cause of the data corruption (since it
did not report any error at the point of backup) or the backup that I have
is for the store that was in Exchange SP1 and now I am restoring into an
SP2. FYI, the error occur immediately after the upgrade from SP1 to SP2, so
I do not have SP2 backup and I cannot uninstall SP2. I am in a fix now.
Thanks.

Regards,
Kueh.

Through all of this you've yet to post the errors that prevent the
store from being mounted.

Until you do that all anyone can do is speculate about what might be
the problem.

If I am you, I would :-
shudown exchange and image it . then work on the "copy" exchange.
if you dont have the same hardware : download and install vmware workstation
(demo is fine) , then download and install vmware converter standard edition
(for free) then use the later tool to make a virtual machine image of the
same exchange. this would make your life easier because it is exactly the
same machine. just be sure not to plug the copy machine to the real network.
(you may need to have also a DC connected to the fake network by the
exchange) .
the process i mentioned is not long by the way!
