Removing Shortcut Arrow On Desktop Icons

I just upgraded to Vista Ultimate, and I was wondering if there was a way to
get rid of the "shortcut arrows" on my desktop icons. I find them to be
quite annoying!
I know that in the past, when I used WinXP, the (free) power toy TweakUI did
the trick, but I can't seem to find anything comparable for Vista ...

I experience the same thing; sometimes- not every time - (and I can't
work out what the common factor is) - when I try to resume from
hibernate, Vista goes to the log-in screen (for my password) briefly,
but then proceeds to shut down. I say 'shut down'; it actually proceeds
to hibernate again.
