LookupAccountName() fails with "Access Denied" in some very specific cases only

On SOME of our domain hosts ONLY, when a process running on machine under
the system account (during a boot-time GPO) asks the DC for the SID for the
computer's account (i.e., DOMAIN\HOSTNAME$) using the LookupAccountName()
API, this fails with error 5, i.e. "Access Denied"...

We have an Visual Studio 2005 C++ X64 single-threaded application
that is computationally and storage intense. It uses somewhere north
of 100GB of Virtual Memory; we've configured the VM space to
be some 280GB, much larger than we actually reach.
The machine is a 8 processor system with 16Gb of physical RAM.
