Only a handful of messages avail on the newsserver

Hi,
I wonder why this group (and some others) do keep only
a handful messages on the newsserver.
It seems it is based on some nbr of days (30 days ?).
IMHO a better method would be to use nbr of messages
to keep on the server (for these groups for example 1000),
or a combination of both.
