I have written a piece of code using LDAP native APIs following MSDN
guidelines and have managed to receive LDAP change notifications from Active
Directory. However, running the same code against ADAM does not return any
notifications.

Virtual server is that what we use for testing. I think you do not need the
complete domain rebuilded, prepare a similar one with the same security setup
and policies same patch level for servers. So one DC should be enough, ans
