Wanted: XSLT example that computes size of text

I am presently using emacs/elisp code to convert my SVG file to C++. In my
C++ I call special GDI functions to center the text in a specified rectange.
My goal is to use define a common XML from which I will generate SVG and
XAML using XSLT.
Does anyone have an example XSLT that uses a function like GetTex ...

Different XPath testing behavior when using xslCompiledTransform(t

When I use xslCompiledTransform() or xslCompiledTransform(false) I find that
the XPath queries in my select query attributes do not recognize any
attributes inthe xml document. But when I enable debugging
-xslCompiledTransform(true)- everything works as it should.
for example:

I have an XML file containing news items, each of which has a date
associated with it. I want to display only the news item with the most
recent date.
This is the approach I'm using:

copying a node into a variable, but changing one attribute value

node into a variable, but I want to change the value of one of the
attributes somewhere within the node. For example, if I have the
