Word 2008 - Insert, Picture, ?

For some reason, my Insert menu does not have an Insert Picture From File option. The only two choices are: "Horizontal Line" and "Autoshapes".
Does anyone know why I lost the "From File" option?

Viewing objects in Word

When I open word, inserted objects (pictures, formulas, charts) appear as white boxes. If I print them they are there- but I can not see them on the screen.
I can also cut and paste them (as PDFs and they show up fine) so it seems that it is a setting- but ...
