Messenger Disconnects As Soon As I Type

I recently added Leopard to my MAC. I also downloaded Messenger 7.0 for Mac.
Now when I sign in, which works fine, as soon I try to instant message a
contact, the second I hit the keypad, I am immediately logged off.
Any ideas as to why this is happening?

I am having problems with my messenger for mac, it wont let me change
my display picture into one of my own, it says the pictures have to be
the proper format, all my pictures are either .png or .jpg
This is really confusing. ...

Appear offline before signing in on Messenger

Hi there,
From what I see, we can only select to appear offline after signing
in.
Is there anyway to do this before signing in?
I'm using Messenger for Mac version 7.
