Accessing the word lists, finding the results within a document

I'm looking into using Indexing Service for an application and was
wondering if there is anyway to access the word lists of the resulting
documents? That is, once I have performed a search, it would be nice
if for each result I could access the word list stored for that
document in the index. This would save ...

How do i get the Index Server to permit searching for just a single
character like 'a' ?
And how do i enable the possibility to search for special chars like '/' so
i can search for 'A/S' ?
