Odd POP problem with logons

I've a straight forward IIS SMTP/POP3 configuration. A while ago a
user was unable to logon to get to his POP account. This went on for a
few days. Now that user account is working, and another one is doing
the same thing: no response from the server messages.
The SMPT/POP server's log does not show a logon ...

Relaying SMTP and security issues

I have been trying and trying and trying to setup CDO for my ASP
applications. Finally I setup relaying for the SMTP and everything worked
great.
The network is totally internal, except 1 outside line, but there are no
public IPs.
What kind of security issues do I have because of this relaying?

on my Windows XP with IIS and IIS_SMTP running It works. But when I move the
