knowing the z-depth of a point in the backbuffer

Hi
is there a way to determine the z-coordinate for a point (X,Y) in the
back buffer (after rendering to it)?
is it as simple as using: device.DepthStencilSurface and accessing the
returned surface or is there another trick to doing that?
