.AVI files will not play

When I attempt to play a .avi file in my WMP the only thing it does is play
the visualizations insted of the video and plays no sound. I get the error
message " a codec is required to plauy this file" I am not sure which codec
to download or where to get it. Could someone please help me? thank you so

Burning CDs to use on a CD player

Vista. Media Centre. I can burn a CD to use on the computer, but it will not
play on my car radio or CD player. 'Help' tells me that I should use
'Mastered' format, but I cannot find anywhere to choose this format.

How can I update my WMP 9 to WMP 10?
I need to update to WMP 10 in order to download music on my little boy's MP3
player.
I can not udate my Windows 2000 to WIndows Vista until next year when I plan
on buying a new computer.

Won't play mpg files

As subject says I can't play mpg files. A message comes up saying:
"Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file. For
additional assistance, click Web Help."
I can't get a solution from Web Help.
Anyone have any ideas how to get it to play these files?
