xp media centre issues - sound and recordings

I have two issues:
1 - media centre only uses 2 of my 5 speakers when showing live TV. playing
music and dvds works properly and all 5 speakers, though. i have configured
the centre to use 5.1 speakers correctly (I think).

Check that the IR emitter attached to the front of your Expressview box
hasn't come loose. If so, put it back on.
Go back through TV setup and verify that you can change the cable box
channels there. If not, you may have a bad IR receiver or emitter.
