wmp 10 will play local wmv but not remote

I'm using windows media player 10 on xp + sp2 in vmware on a linux
machine. Vmware has a facility for making a linux partition visible
inside xp and it works flawlessly (can read/write that partition from xp).
When I open wmp and use its 'file/open' menu to navigate to this linux
partition where the wmv is ...
