I was at frys and normally with MM I can input form a camera live using the
capture video function but could not on the Sony vaio laptop. is there
something I missing or is the Sony built in cam non wdm compliant?

It's Vista !
As far as I can see there are a lot of problems with Vista and video
encoders (and not only that)
