garbled sound Win Media Player 11

Had Windows Media Player 9 on my XP laptop. Worked fine. I used the update
function on the help tab and it was updated to Win Media Player 11. Now all
sound for any and all video files is garbled. And some video files don't
"play". It's just a still image of the first frame of the video.
