WMP 11 on winXP - can't play mp3, wav or .asx

I'm not sure what's caused this but WMP 11.0.5721.5268 is not behaving
itself. When I try to play any mp3s I get the error,
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the
file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."
All of these files used to play ...

Laptop opinions for video-editing please

I'm posting this on behalf of my friend, who is about to buy a
laptop. She has a DV camera that's from back when they cost a bit,
and a new Flip HD. She still very satisfactorily uses the DV camera
with her 2004 Mac, which is a 1 ghz machine, possibly 1.3, with 1 gb

When I try to play videos online that use WMP, it will bring up the player
like its going to play it, but it only says "ready" and will not play. When I
hit the play button, it does not work either. I cannot play any video online
from any website using WMP. normal WMP works fine as far as i can tell. ...

How do you edit file associations in Windows Media 12?

Either Microsoft removed the option to edit file associations in Windows
Media 12 or it's now buried and hidden so deep that it's impossible to find.
Does anyone know how to do this or is it impossible? If I can't change
this, then I'm uninstalling WMP12. ...

a wmv file, it insists on downloading the complete file before playing. Is
