Lost Messages in OE6 on Win XP

I was just called in to help with a problem with lost messages in
Outlook Express 6 folders.
When I look at the DBX files for folders that the user says are
supposed to have messages, I see that the DBX file is fairly large
(500KB or so which might correspond to its "real" size with messages)

Reading Newsgroup Messages In OE & WLM

Here's another doozy deficiency in WLM.
When reading newsgroup messages in OE one only had to read them once.
Messages were marked as read in other newsgroups after they had been read
once in another watched newsgroup.
That does not seem to be the case in WLM -- other copies of the same message
in other new ...

.bak files not in Recycle Bin after compact

My files still compact, but normally you would see the .bak files being
copied and filling the Recycle Bin during the process. I'm not seeing that
anymore and after it's done compacting, there are no .bak files in the
Recycle Bin
I recently deleted hundreds of e-mails, but I don't think that should matter
...

In OE one can paste newsgroup addresses from one message into a new one.
But this does not seem to be possible in WLM. The addresses are grayed-out.
Was this done to stymie bots picking up addresses?

Receiving e-mail problem
