TS Client - How Secure?

Question, How secure is the TS client (Remote Desktop Connection from
WinXP)? Can you make it reasonably secure? I have run sessions through
VPNs but I am wondering if that is necessary?

Application read from reg fails

We have an app that writes and reads the HKLM hive. For example, it stores
the name of a sql server and reads it just before displaying its logon
screen. The read works for admin users, but not ordinary users. However,

I have a strange problem that one user eg jon runs fine though terminal
server
Any other user logging onto server causes logon screen on sage to take along
time to startup
Then when you logon gives error and fails to logon

Additional keystrokes in terminal session

When typing in a terminal session, one remote user gets an additional "^"
character inserted between the other keystrokes. This character does not
appear when the user is not typing, but always appears while typing at a
fixed interval of about 5 seconds.
