RDP won't connect, no error msg

Suddenly RDP won't connect. I'm running two machines on WinXP SP3 32-bit,
and suddenly, yesterday, RDP won't connect.
I don't get any error message, RDP just blinks "Connecting to
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" and then dissapears without any error message. I've tried

We have an XP machine set up with software that has a single license
(actually we have several, but most are fine). The machine is not
accessible to users, they have to use Remote Desktop to get to it. Hey -
it's cheaper than license managing software, and mac and unix folk can get

SP3 upgrade to RDP 6.1 can't connect to NT 4 TS

The SP3 upgrades the client from 6.0 to 6.1, which can no longer connect to
our existing NT4 Terminal Servers, it gives a protol error. The upgrade
embeds the client and apparently can't easily be rolled back. ...
