slow pc boot up after reinstall

Hi,
I have a HP tower with XP home. It was attacked by viruses and malware. I
cleaned it and it still ran slow. I did a complete reinstall with the HP
repair software and it ran fine. Then I did the updates and it ran fine. I
loaded the data, music, and pictures after I scanned them for virus and they

Desktop display

Lost Dual Core use but both show up - XP Pro SP3

I did a repair install and upgraded to SP3 but have noticed the system is
now only using one core of a dual core processor.
System hardware shows both, Everest shows both but a performance test shows
half usual performance and BIONC software is only running one core??
System in ASUS P5K-VM with Intel E6850 ...

editing the registry

when i run regedit, i can see that there are still several references in the
registry to some programs that i have long since uninstalled. specifically,
i can see these under HKEY_CURRENT-USER/Software/. For example, there is a
folder there for Nero, which i have long since trashed, as well as a few

I've tried everything here but here's what happens-I type chkdsk and all I
see is the 'little black box' open for a second, close, and I'm back where I
